Pop Brixton Social Value Report Published

Lambeth Council and Makeshift have announced the extension of the innovative Pop Brixton meanwhile project by a further two years.  The decision follows the completion of our evaluation of the social and economic impacts achieved by Pop to date, and lessons learnt since the project opened in 2015.

Pop is a community project, event venue and the home of a community of independent retailers, restaurants, street food start-ups and social enterprises. Located in the heart of Brixton, it was conceived as a meanwhile use for a vacant site owned by Lambeth Council. The aim was to deliver a project focused around local enterprise and employment, and which supported the wider social and economic aspirations being pursued by the council via the Future Brixton programme. Funded by Carl Turner Architects and the Collective, and managed by Makeshift, Pop opened its doors in May 2015, with an original lifespan of three years.

Regeneris was appointed by Makeshift and LB Lambeth to undertake an evaluation of the performance and impact of the project, focusing on the extent to which it has delivered against its social objectives. Our work included detailed consultation with traders, community groups and visitors to understand the value added delivered by the project from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective.

The report found that the project has delivered a strong series of economic and social outcomes, and has succeeded in engaging with a broad cross-section of the Brixton community via its diverse programming of events and activities.

Continuing to ensure that local people use and benefit remains the key challenge for Pop, in particular continually redefining its role in a rapidly changing place.

Our evaluation provides recommendations on how Makeshift and Lambeth Council can work together over the coming years to maximise community benefit and to ensure that the delivery of a strong legacy once Pop closes its doors in 2021.
