Economic Impacts of DONG Energy in the Humber

Question: What benefits have DONG Energy’s offshore wind farm brought to the Humber?

DONG Energy has developed several wind farms off the Humber coast and has plans for further wind farms in this area which will see hundreds of new wind turbines installed over the next 5-10 years. DONG Energy wanted to know what economic and social benefits this investment would have for the economy of Hull and the Humber.

Solution: analysing direct, supply chain and wider economic impacts

Regeneris developed a clear and compelling report to explain the potential benefits such as job and wealth creation, inward investment, skills development and enhancing perceptions of the area. We worked closely with DONG Energy’s team to gather data, speak to firms in their supply chain and analyse the local economy. We also looked beyond the core economic data to the wider role the company has played in the Humber, including its support to attract the major Siemens turbine blade factory investment in Hull.

Impact: informing and influencing national stakeholders

DONG Energy has been able to demonstrate the economic benefits that it brings to the Humber area, and more broadly what the offshore wind sector can secure for local economies in the UK. Our report has helped DONG Energy inform and influence national stakeholders and build local support for the UK offshore wind sector. The report and its findings were also picked up in local and national newspapers, providing excellent positive coverage for the company.

We have worked with Regeneris for a number of years, both on socio-economic studies for planning submissions and also, more recently, to demonstrate the socio-economic benefits that DONG Energy has brought to the Humber area, around £6bn, and the North West of the UK, around £5.5bn.
