Do's and Don'ts

Top Tip: Desensitisation is often most effective if you try a gradual approach from the border zone of hypersensitivity

Do

  • Explain what you are trying to achieve
  • Encourage short periods of desensitisation regularly throughout the day
  • Encourage daily practice
  • Use different textures and temperatures
  • Reassess response in terms of mapping regularly
  • Support with patient information leaflet

Don’t

  • Assume the patient is desensitising appropriately: Massaging or only touching the most sensitive area is not effective
